Tier 1 Chair funding has been renewed for two École Polytechnique de Montréal research professors, the school confirmed today during the official Canada Research Chairs announcement. Mohamad Sawan, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Intelligent Medical Devices and a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering, has been awarded renewed funding for his Chair, which is developing medical devices and miniature prostheses designed to improve quality of life for the sight and hearing disabled, and people with certain types of paralysis. François Soumis, holder of the Canada Research Chair in Large Transportation Network Optimization (LTNO) and a professor in the Department of Mathematical and Industrial Engineering, has also obtained renewed funding for his Research Chair.

The Canada Research Chair in Intelligent Medical Devices and the Canada Research Chair in Large Transportation Network Optimization (LTNO) will each benefit from a $1.4-million research grant ($200,000 per year over seven years).
"The renewal of funding for these two research chairs vividly demonstrates the importance that the Government of Canada ascribes to initiatives related to health and the economy," noted Christophe Guy, Chief Executive Officer of École Polytechnique de Montréal. "Polytechnique is a cradle of impressive discoveries and technological innovations that contribute significantly to improved quality of life for the citizens of Québec and the rest of Canada." Polytechnique is currently home to 25 Canada Research Chairs.
