Activities commemorating December 6, 1989

Twenty-nine years have passed since the attack that took the lives of 14 young women on December 6, 1989, at Polytechnique Montréal. To honour the memory of the victims of this tragedy, several commemorative activities have been organized.
Week of the White Rose
In support of the fifth edition of the Week of the White Rose, being held from November 30 to December 6, 2018, Polytechnique is reaching out to its entire community as well as the general public, to ask you to purchase a virtual white rose.
All proceeds from rose sales go to Folie Technique, Polytechnique Montréal’s science camp. With the funds raised, Folie Technique is able to give girls from disadvantaged communities the opportunity to take part in science awareness activities.
Since its inception, the Week of the White Rose has raised more than $60,000, enabling 5,000 girls to attend school science workshops and participate in the Folie Technique summer camp. This non-profit organization can’t keep up with the demand, however. The “100% girls” groups are so popular, the organization struggles to fulfil the many registration requests. Give white roses.
Order of the White Rose scholarship
Monday, December 3 at 11 a.m., Polytechnique will hold the fourth edition of the Order of the White Rose award ceremony. This order honours a Canadian woman engineering student who plans to enrol in graduate studies in engineering by awarding her a $30,000 scholarship. Find out more.
Laying of rose wreaths in front of the commemorative plaque
On Thursday, December 6, at approximately 8:30 a.m., a wreath of white roses will be placed in front of the commemorative plaque by Polytechnique Principal and Chair of the Board Michèle Thibodeau-DeGuire, Polytechnique Deputy Chief Executive Officer François Bertrand, Polytechnique student association President Manuel Klaassen, and Polytechnique graduate student association President Nikolay Radoev. Staff, students and the general public are invited to come and gather throughout the day. The commemorative plaque is located outdoors, on the southwest wall of Polytechnique’s main building.
Light beams on Mount Royal
As a tribute to the women who sadly lost their lives on December 6, 1989, the Comité Mémoire, in collaboration with the Ville de Montréal, invites the public to a gathering on the Kondiaronk belvedere on Thursday, December 6, at 5 p.m.
For a fifth year, this Moment Factory production will light up the city skies from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Following a brief welcome and a moment of silence, the light beams will be projected into the sky as the names of the 14 victims are read out.
