Printed Electronics and 3D Printing as Emerging New Technologies – Interests from Canadian Forest Industry
Tingjie (Gary) Li
FPInnovations, Montréal
Printing has made significant impact on our society and daily life, particularly through process improvement (high speed, high volume) and technology advancement (e.g. digital printing, personalized printing). However, in recent years, the spreading of internet has created significant impact on printing, leading to the decline in demand for graphic printing (thus printing & writing papers). Despite these challenges, printing as a well-established technology is now being explored for new applications including printing electronics (PE) and 3D printing. This seminar will give an overview of the trends in PE and 3D printing, with a special focus on the interests from the Canadian forest industry (paper and packaging sector in particular). The research activities on PE and 3D printing at FPInnovations will also be highlighted.
Gary received his Ph.D. degree in 2012 from the University of Western Ontario in Mechanical and Materials Engineering with expertise on biomicroelectromechanical systems, flexible/ stretchable electronics, surface chemistry, and analytical electrochemistry and owns several patents applications. He joined FPInnovations right after his graduation and worked as a research scientist to develop new paper and packaging applications using printed electronics technologies and to explore 3D printing applications for forest industry. Gary is also active in promoting technical exchanges and R&D collaborations between FPInnovations and other organizations by delivering presentations at major conferences and exhibitions.
