Energy Transition : The long Journey Ahead.

The present energy system based on non-sustainable carbon-based resources is reaching its limits. As the 'business-as-usual' scenario will not be able to cope with the increasing global energy demand, while addressing climate change issues, greener scenarios must be adopted to reduce the environmental footprint of energy production and use. They rely mostly on a significant increase in energy efficiency, the reduction of the energy consumption, the development of renewable and new energy sources, and greenhouse gas mitigation measures. Many countries have embarked into the transformation of their energy system, with significantly different strategies. In this presentation, we will compare some of the proposed approaches. We will also show that RDD&D is central to the success of the “Energy Transition”. This will be illustrated with a few examples on how Total prepares for this paradigm shift.

Dr Philippe A. Tanguy is the Vice President, R&D Programs, Partnerships and International Relations of the international oil company TOTAL in Paris. He obtained a Doctorate degree in Physics (University of Paris-Diderot), a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering (Laval University), and he worked as a post-doctoral fellow for General Electric Canada. Before joining TOTAL in 2009, Dr Tanguy had a prolific academic career in several Canadian universities, including Dalhousie University, Laval University and Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal. It is at Ecole Polytechnique that he created and headed the Research Centre in Industrial Flow Processes, and he was awarded the NSERC-Paprican Industrial Research Chair in process engineering between 1993 and 2003, followed by the Total Industrial Research Chair until late 2008. Dr Tanguy is now adjunct professor at Ecole Polytechnique of Montreal.

In parallel, to his academic activities, Dr Tanguy created a successful engineering consulting company Rheotek Inc. Rheotek worked with industrial customers worldwide including Dow Chemicals, Procter & Gamble, the US Navy and Engelhard in the USA, Sumitomo Heavy Industry in Japan, 3M in France and Groupe ONA in Morocco. His association with TOTAL started in 1992 and resulted in numerous projects with business units of the Chemical, Exploration & Production, and Refining and Marketing branches. In 2003, he was appointed as the Vice President, Corporate Science & Technology of Total American Services (Houston), with the mandate of representing the Corporate Scientific Division of TOTAL in the Americas and managing the regional Corporate R&D program.
