[Séminaire de génie mécanique] Passive suppression of vibrations using non-linear energy sinks

Séminaire de Guilherme Rosa Franzini, Assistant Professor, Escola Politécnica at University of São Paulo, Brazil

Passive suppression of vibrations is a key point for several mechanical systems. The use of linear absorbers such as the Tuned Mass Dampers (TMDs) is well known. However, in the last years, a series of efforts has been put on the use of essentially non-linear (non-linearizable natural frequency) sub-systems coupled to the main structure by means of a dashpot. These sub-systems are named non-linear energy sinks (NES).

This seminar focuses on presenting some investigations under development by the research group from Escola Politécnica, University of São Paulo – Brazil. These investigations aim to study the efficacy of the NES as a passive suppressor for a series of problems, including both flow-induced vibrations (FIV) phenomena and oscillations induced by parametric instability.
