This orientation workshop lasts all day long (from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm) and is mandatory for all the new students starting their studies at Polytechnique and who are:
- temporary residents in Canada (study permits or visitors)
- permanent residents or Canadian citizens who have never studied in Québec before
Are you an international student? Congratulations! If you’ve been admitted to Polytechnique it’s because you are an excellent student in your home country. Now you are here, quite a challenge is facing you: adapting to a new academic system. Easy you think? Well, let’s say you are a high-level athlete, a soccer champion for example in your home country, and you’ve just joined the Canadian national team… of hockey! You don’t even know how to ice-skate, or how to score? It’s normal, and this workshop we are offering you is dedicated to teach you all the rules at Polytechnique, that your future local classmates already know. This day is very important for your success!
Here is the list of the main topics:
> First steps at Polytechnique and on campus facilities
> Education system and success strategies: workload, grading, course selection, rate of growth, language skills and employability
> Students’ challenges, cultural adaptation and stress management
> Rules to respect and plagiarism
> Budget: Tuition fees and finances management
> Legal status in Canada: Medical insurance and Immigration
> Students committees
> Québec discovery
