To enable students, staff and faculty with high-speed Internet (e.g. Sympatico, Vidéotron) to access Polytechnique’s services while off campus, in spring 2003 the Service informatique (IT Services) implemented a VPN (Virtual Private Network): a server that essentially extends the school’s network right to your home computer.
Once connected through the VPN, your computer will use a Polytechnique IP address to communicate with the school’s servers.
Importante :
- If, after connecting to the VPN, you are unable to establish an Internet connection, it means you’ve forgotten to uncheck Utiliser la passerelle par défaut pour le réseau distant in the TCP/IP preferences.
- It takes roughly three minutes for the GRE (Generalized Routing Encapsulation) protocol to take effect. If you’ve configured your client to reconnect to the VPN when the connection fails, check to see that you have programmed at least a three-minute delay.
- If you use an xDSL home router, check whether there is a PPTP Passthrough parameter and, as needed, enable this option. With an xDSL router, a single device can establish one PPTP connection at a time on a given server.
N.B.! Some routers use PPTP to authenticate the service provider and access the Internet through its network. This mode of authentication is in use in Europe; however, no North American provider uses it. You cannot therefore use these configuration settings to access Polytechnique’s PPTP VPN server.
- PPTP and firewalls:
PPTP uses TCP port 1723 to establish a connection and transmits data through IP protocol 47 (GRE). Once the options have been set up, the server begins transmitting data through GRE. If your computer is equipped with a firewall, make sure it is configured to enable the VPN.
- You need to configure the library proxy if you wish to browse the electronic collections when connected to the VPN, since the VPN blocks Internet access.
