WAN access
IT Services currently has 64 computer modems (33.6 Kbps) to provide Internet access to the entire Polytechnique student body. This is essentially a basic service to enable e-mail and course server access. Given that the number of available lines is insufficient to meet the full needs of Polytechnique students, user access is restricted during peak periods as follows:
Graduate students and undergraduate computer engineering students |
Full Internet access |
Undergraduate students in all other programs |
Full Internet access |
User time is calculated only during the peak period (i.e. between 4 p.m. and midnight, seven days a week). Internet use during non-peak periods is not withdrawn from a student’s allocated time. However, an overall maximum usage of 100 hours per month is considered to be reasonable. Anyone exceeding this limit on a regular basis may receive a reprimand ranging from a warning to the cancellation of his or her user ID.
Each morning, students who have logged on to Polytechnique’s Internet in the last 24 hours will receive an e-mail message detailing their usage statistics. Besides showing their balance of hours, these statistics will show any unauthorized use of their user ID. Should this be the case, they should immediately request a change of password by contacting postmaster@polymtl.ca. Students who exceed their allocated monthly limits are no longer permitted to connect at peak periods until the start of the next month, though they can still connect during non-peak periods. The time limit per Internet session applies at all times.
The Internet is made available to Polytechnique students for academic purposes and is presumed to be used as such. Accordingly, Internet use is governed by the following rules:
At time of connection, the access server will issue a text message listing either the remaining usage time or the reason access is denied. These messages can interfere with the proper functioning of custom scripts (e.g. those used in Linux). The message may be one of the following:
