Access policy (Students)

IT Services currently has 64 computer modems (33.6 Kbps) to provide Internet access to the entire Polytechnique student body. This is essentially a basic service to enable e-mail and course server access. Given that the number of available lines is insufficient to meet the full needs of Polytechnique students, user access is restricted during peak periods as follows:

Graduate students and undergraduate computer engineering students

Full Internet access
1.5 hours per connection
20 hours of peak-period access per month

Undergraduate students in all other programs

Full Internet access
1 hour per connection
10 hours of peak-period access per month

User time is calculated only during the peak period (i.e. between 4 p.m. and midnight, seven days a week). Internet use during non-peak periods is not withdrawn from a student’s allocated time. However, an overall maximum usage of 100 hours per month is considered to be reasonable. Anyone exceeding this limit on a regular basis may receive a reprimand ranging from a warning to the cancellation of his or her user ID.
Each morning, students who have logged on to Polytechnique’s Internet in the last 24 hours will receive an e-mail message detailing their usage statistics. Besides showing their balance of hours, these statistics will show any unauthorized use of their user ID. Should this be the case, they should immediately request a change of password by contacting postmaster@polymtl.ca. Students who exceed their allocated monthly limits are no longer permitted to connect at peak periods until the start of the next month, though they can still connect during non-peak periods. The time limit per Internet session applies at all times.

Usage policy

The Internet is made available to Polytechnique students for academic purposes and is presumed to be used as such. Accordingly, Internet use is governed by the following rules:

  • Do not monopolize the lines to maintain a business or personal website, FTP server, etc. All offenders will have their accounts terminated.
  • Any behaviour that contravenes the Internet code of ethics (Netiquette) will also lead to the termination of the user’s account.
  • Users are responsible for their accounts. Users must not share their user IDs with anyone else and must never divulge their passwords.
  • All computers connected to Polytechnique’s modems must be free of viruses, malware or any program liable to disrupt the institution’s network. Violators will have their accounts suspended until we receive confirmation that the workstation has been disinfected and its functionality restored.

At time of connection, the access server will issue a text message listing either the remaining usage time or the reason access is denied. These messages can interfere with the proper functioning of custom scripts (e.g. those used in Linux). The message may be one of the following:

  • Il vous reste .x. secondes de temps permis (temps que vous pouvez utiliser en période de pointe au cours du mois). [You have _x_ seconds of time remaining in your allotted monthly peak-period time.]
  • Vous avez dépensé tout votre temps permis, accès refusé à l'intérieur des heures d'affluence (16 h à 24 h); - Accès refusé, votre code est déjà en connexion sur un autre modem. [You have used all your allocated time; access denied during peak periods (4 p.m. to midnight). – Access denied: your code is already being used to connect to another modem.]
  • Votre compte est désactivé, contacter... [Your account has been deactivated. Contact ...]

Access policy (Staff, faculty and retirees)

IT Services currently has 48 computer modems (33.6 Kbps) to provide Internet access to Polytechnique staff, faculty and retirees. This is essentially a basic service to enable e-mail and Internet access. Given that the number of available lines is insufficient to meet the full needs of Polytechnique’s staff, faculty and retirees, we must restrict user access during peak periods as follows:

Teaching staff, retired professors and special cases

Full Internet access
1.5 hours per connection
100 hours of access per month

Non-teaching staff and employees (current and retired)

Full Internet access
1.5 hours per connection
100 hours of access per month

Each morning, any member of the any staff, faculty or a retiree who has logged onto Polytechnique’s Internet in the last 24 hours will receive an e-mail message detailing their usage statistics. Besides showing their balance of hours, these statistics will show any unauthorized use of their user ID. Should this be the case, they should immediately request a change of password by contacting postmaster@polymtl.ca. Users who exceed their allocated monthly limits are no longer permitted to connect until the start of the next month.

Usage policy

The Internet is made available to Polytechnique’s staff, faculty and retirees for their personal use and is presumed to be used as such. Internet use is accordingly governed by the following rules:

  • Do not monopolize the lines to maintain a business or personal website, FTP server, etc. All offenders will have their accounts terminated.
  • Any behaviour that contravenes the Internet code of ethics (Netiquette) will also lead to the termination of the user’s account.
  • Users are responsible for their accounts. Users must not share their user IDs with any others and must never divulge their passwords.
  • All computers connected to Polytechnique’s modems must be free of viruses, malware or any program liable to disrupt the institution’s network. Violators will have their accounts suspended until we receive confirmation that the workstation has been disinfected and its functionality restored.
