Biography

Dr Carl-Éric Aubin is a full professor with the Department of Mechanical Engineering at Polytechnique Montréal, Researcher at Sainte-Justine University Hospital Center, and associate professor with the Department of Surgery at Université de Montréal. He holds two Chairs: the Canada Research Chair in Orthopedic Engineering and the NSERC-Medtronic Industrial Research Chair in Spine Biomechanics.

Dr Aubin is also the responsible of the research axis on Musculoskeletal Pathologies and Movement Sciences at Sainte-Justine Hospital Research Center, and he co-directs the FRSQ-funded Biomedical Science and Technologies Research Group. He was recently appointed Executive and Scientific Director of the TransMedTech Institute in biomedical engineering and medical technology, for which he was the leader in the obtention of a Canada First Research Excellence Fund (35.6 M$) and of 60 M$ in funding from many partners.

Dr Aubin's scientific interests include the study and biomechanical modeling of various spinal deformity pathologies (scoliosis, spondylolisthesis) and degenerative pathologies (sacro-iliitis, disc degeneration, postural problems), as well as the evaluation, design and optimization of its orthopedic treatment (orthoses, spinal instrumentation, implants), in order to develop more efficient and less invasive treatment approaches.

Dr Aubin has published more than 170 articles in peer-reviewed scientific journals, about 60 articles in edited books and over 590 abstracts in scientific journals or conference proceedings, and has coauthored 7 patents. He has received many awards including the 2016 Polytechnique Montreal Award for Excellence in Research and Innovation, the 2015 Acfas - Jacques-Rousseau Award for Multidisciplinarity, and the 2010 Foundation of Stars - Young Researcher Prize. Dr Aubin has directed or co-directed over 90 master and doctoral students and 20 postdoctoral fellows, of which many now hold important positions in universities, companies, and institutes in Canada, the United States, and Europe.

Dr Aubin belongs to many professional associations, including Quebec's Engineering Professional Order. He is Fellow of the Scoliosis Research Society, a founding member of the International Society for Computer Assisted Orthopedic Surgery and Scientific Director of the Québec Scoliosis Society.

Dr Aubin has been awarded many grants from major organizations (NSERC, CIHR, CFI, FRQS, Canada First, etc.) and industrial partners, including a 7.4 M$ grant (from CFI/MSSS-Québec) for a multicenter research platform on musculoskeletal diseases and for a new operating room dedicated to research, which was inaugurated in January 2017.
