Abstract

Flow assurance is a relatively new field in the oil and gas industry that deals with the ability of the fluids, notably hydrocarbons, to be transported from the well to the surface or production facilities. The gas hydrate and asphaltene formation and deposition in wellbores, well columns and surface facilities have been major challenges in the production of oil and gas in many petroleum reservoirs around the world. In this presentation, the techniques to deal with the modeling and simulation of the multiphase flow containing solid hydrocarbons such as hydrate and asphaltene will be reviewed. Particle interactions such as the steric repulsion and capillary attraction forces and their effect on the hydrocarbon particle jamming, agglomeration and pipeline plugging will also be discussed. The results of the application of one of the recently developed computer methods to a subsea tieback with a typical wellbore, flowline and rise components will be presented.
