Types of graduate programs

At Polytechnique, there are 5 kinds of graduate programs with different objectives, prerequisites and durations:

Doctorate degree (Ph.D.)

Number of credits : 90 (research project is worth between 60 and 75 credits)*

Normal duration : 8 to 11 trimesters full-time only

The doctorate programs in engineering are aimed at helping the candidate develop an advanced level of knowledge, intellectual rigor, scientific curiosity and creativity which are essential skills in leading edge professional activities, scientific research as well as higher education.

These programs of study are designed to allow the candidates to improve their knowledge in their field of specialization and to push back its frontiers, to understand and evaluate the scientific literature and to develop rigorous reasoning and experimentation methods.

*If you already have a graduate diploma or have an equivalent related training which comprises graduate courses (or the equivalent), you can request to be exempted from part or all the course credits of your doctorate program. For more info...

Thesis-based Master’s degree

Number of credits : 45 (research project is worth 30 credits)

Normal duration : 4 to 6 trimesters full-time only

These programs of study are intended for candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree of scientific nature and who wish to improve their technological and scientific skills in a particular field of engineering. The thesis option favours the development of the scientific part of the candidate’s training by deepening his/her knowledge and introducing him/her to research.

Course-based Master’s degree

Number of credits : 45 (project or internship is worth 6 to 15 credits)

Normal duration (full-time) : 4 to 6 trimesters. These programs are also offered on a part-time basis.

These programs of study are intended for candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree of scientific nature and who wish to improve their technological and scientific skills in a particular field of engineering. The courses option fosters the development of the professional aspect of the candidate’s training by deepening his/her knowledge and allowing him/her to specialize in a specific field. 

Advanced graduate diploma (DESS, diplôme d’études supérieures spécialisées)

Number of credits : 30

Normal duration (full-time): 2 to 3 trimesters. These programs are also offered on a part-time basis.

These programs of study are intended for candidates who have completed an undergraduate degree of scientific nature and who wish to complete their training by taking graduate level courses.

Microprograms

Number of credits: 9 to 15

Normal duration (full-time): 3 to 6 trimesters. These programs are also offered on a part-time basis.

The microprograms are intended for people wishing to improve their knowledge or acquire new ones in their initial field of specialization or wishing to develop new skills related to the use of new technologies in their working environment.
