Prospective graduate students
WELCOME to Ph.D. Prospective students
If you already have a graduate diploma or have an equivalent related training which comprises graduate courses (or the equivalent*), you can request to be exempted from part or all the course credits of your doctorate program (for more information)
Rule 73.1.2: Upon recommendation of his/her program’s graduate studies committee, a student holding a graduate diploma and having a relevant training comprising courses at the graduate level (or the equivalent), can request to be exempted from part or all the course credits of his/her doctorate program (with the exception of ING 6900 unless the student has taken it at the master’s level or previously passed an equivalent course). A similar exemption can also apply in the case of a student who already has another doctorate degree.
Exempted courses must be approved by the research supervisor. The number of credits to be completed within the framework of the candidate’s doctoral studies is determined according to the number of exempted credits. The doctorate consists of a total of 90 credits; the difference in terms of credits is allotted to the conduct of the project and the writing of the thesis.
Such an exemption must be granted before the student’s first registration in the doctorate program, or at the latest, at the end of the first semester of his/her doctoral studies. The present article’s does not exempt the student from taking the comprehensive exam. The latter must be taken according to the rules enunciated in article 75.
Depending on your profile and following the approval of your research supervisor, you may be exempted from taking any courses, thereby allowing you to fully invest yourself into your field of research from the first semester.
Do not forget to ask for your course exemption by adding a letter to your admission application to that end. You can also do so throughout your first semester of study.
*Only those courses taken at the graduate level after being awarded a bacc+5 degree in the European system or the equivalent will be considered.
