Research areas description
Methane and contaminants come out of solution when oil is pumped to the surface from high pressure reservoirs. Gas pipeline infrastructure is too costly for small volumes so it is flare (or vented), which harms the environment. The Chair's research program will develop economic micro-refinery technology to produce diesel type hydrocarbons from this wasted natural gas. It will integrate multiple heterogeneous catalytic reactions in a single vessel and seek economies through mass manufacturing rather than scale. Process intensification through remotely operated reactors operating at the well head will reduce the environmental foot print of oil and gas operations.
