Polytechnique wins the 2014 Championnat national de débat oratoire francophone
On March 14 and 15, Polytechnique hosted 64 student debaters for the 2014 Championnat national de débat oratoire francophone (francophone national debating championship). The tournament was a Canadian University Society for Intercollegiate Debate/Société universitaire canadienne de débat intercollégial event and several participants were from other Canadian provinces, the U.S. and France.
Polytechnique finished in first place, winning the oratorical debating finals. The team comprised Stéphane Dauphin-Pierre and Victor Sanchez, members of Polytechnique's student debating society, the Société de Débat Étudiant de Polytechnique (SDEP), also known as PolyDébat. This was the first time in the league's history that a Polytechnique team made it to the finals.
Individually, members of the Polytechnique team also finished in the top ranks. Victor Sanchez, an electrical engineering student, finished third among the 64 debaters. For individual public speaking, aerospace engineering student Adam Samson took second place.
