Partnership between University of British Columbia, Simon Fraser University and Polytechnique Montréal to create the Canadian International Institute for Extractive Industries and Development
A coalition formed by University of British Columbia and Simon Fraser University, in partnership with Polytechnique Montréal, was selected to create the Canadian International Institute for Extractive Industries and Development. This institute will be funded by a contribution of $25 million from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) and by contributions from strategic partners.
The Institute's mandate is to pool Canadian expertise and place it at the disposal of developing countries to improve and
strengthen the governance of extractive resources, stimulate economic growth and reduce poverty. The Institute will collaborate
with national partners in the realm of politics, legislation, regulation and the implementation of mining projects. The
Institute will be headquartered at UBC, with an office at Polytechnique Montréal.
The capacities of developing countries will be strengthened through five main types of activities:
- Technical assistance in the fields related to extractive industries;
- Providing courses leading to certifications for community organization leaders and government authorities;
- Study trips for government representatives, university students and community leaders from developing countries;
- Collaboration and dialogue with stakeholders to identify sustainable-development needs and contribute to the inclusion of various social groups;
- Collaboration between national and Canadian colleagues in training, applied research and technical assistance to ensure that the initiatives meet the needs.
Polytechnique Montréal is confident that the Institute will not only help developing countries to profit from their natural resources, but will also help Canadian businesses to enjoy fair, transparent and predictable regulation in the extraction sector.
