Mohamad Sawan, a professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering at Polytechnique, has received the J.-Armand-Bombardier award on Thursday, October 6, 2005, from the Association francophone pour le savoir (Acfas) during the organization's 61st Science Gala.

The J.-Armand Bombardier award, which has a value of $5,000, is presented in recognition of technological innovation that has been successfully marketed or that shows promising potential.

The award has been presented to Professor Sawan for his various contributions in the area of implantable medical devices, in particular for his bladder-control project for patients with spinal cord injuries.

The project has generated various types of implantable devices that have been created and tested on animals in the wild in collaboration with specialists in specific medical fields. A licence for the research project was also given to the Victhom firm to test the product on humans and then introduce it to the market. Several aspects of the project can also be used in different medical fields (e.g., breathing-related problems).

Congratulations, Professor Sawan, for this latest distinction!
