A chemical engineering student since fall 2014, Lucas Ruel is the second Schulich Leader Scholarship winner to enter Polytechnique Montréal.

Lucas Ruel, admitted in fall 2014 to the chemical engineering bachelor's program at Polytechnique, was awarded a bursary of $80,000. Along with a remarkable student record, this young man from the Centre-du-Québec region balanced work and study in order to help fund his studies. Determined, mature and committed, he struck a good balance between involvement and excellence. Polytechnique is very proud to have among its ambassadors a student with such exemplary grades and a leader who plays an active role within his community.

Laurence Poirier-Blanchette also won a Schulich scholarship of $60,000. She was admitted to Université de Montréal's Faculty of Medicine. Ms. Poirier-Blanchette demonstrates a strong sense of engagement and a constant desire to make a positive impact on her surroundings. Creative and passionate, she produced an awareness-raising video about trisomy. As well, she volunteered to take care of two young people with intellectual disabilities in an Ontario summer camp. She also travelled to Argentina, where she was involved with an orphanage. Her numerous volunteer commitments, her sensitivity, her vision and her strong convictions help her to be an agent of change in society.

The Schulich Leader Scholarships were created by Canadian businessman and philanthropist Seymour Schulich. Along with the Canadian initiative, a similar Schulich Leader Scholarship program operates in Israel. With a total value of $100 million, the program was established to ensure Canada's and Israel's economic competitiveness. It aims to support the Canadian and Israeli scientists of tomorrow in their research and innovation efforts.

Our heartiest congratulations!
