Esteban IV, the solar vehicle designed by students at École Polytechnique de Montréal, has crossed the starting line at the Panasonic World Solar Challenge, the most prestigious international solar-powered vehicle race, which started yesterday and runs to October 28 in Australia. The race will take the students from Darwin in the north to Adelaide in the south--a route of nearly 3,000 kilometres on board a solar-powered vehicle that uses the same amount of energy as a hairdryer.

The Panasonic World Solar Challenge brings together some 40 prototypes from companies and universities around the world. The Esteban team is the only one from Québec and one of only four from Canada to participate in the race.

Over this past weekend, the Polytechnique team successfully passed the rigorous inspections and dynamic tests (brakes, acceleration, endurance, etc.) imposed by judges of the Panasonic World Solar Challenge.
