2011 Polytechnique Open House welcomes record number of visitors
The Polytechnique Open House is an opportunity for all sorts of visitors to discover the multiple facets of engineering and
research.
Explosive demonstrations, interactive science activities and impressive prototypes were all on the menu. The day's
activities included Picnic Defense, an online game created by Polytechnique students for the Laval Virtual
international competition; the learning stage, which presented exciting demonstrations of things such as extreme
microwaves that generated plasmas and electrical arcs; and the Baja SAE, which gave three mind-boggling performances
for the crowd.
Visitors could circulate among the various booths and learn about our 12 bachelor's programs, including the
biomedical engineering and aerospace engineering programs exclusive to Polytechnique, and about our some 70 graduate
training programs. Guided tours were very popular again this year as well! Some 20 laboratories from the various
departments opened their doors for the occasion.
The day's science workshops, integrative project demonstrations, internship and exchange programs, and student technical
society inventions once again garnered much interest this year. The star of the day was the brand new technical company
PolyProject and its remarkable inventions. With a sensor glove that translates sign language and an ocular
prosthesis that reacts to light, PolyProject definitely impressed!
Visitors could also try their hands at being game show contestants on a quiz game based on a very fun questionnaire created by Folie Technique. New this year: kids and grown-ups could immortalize their visit to Polytechnique by having a Poly-Photo picture taken near the race car of their choice. A great souvenir of their time at Polytechnique!
In short: the day was a smashing success. See you at next year's edition!
