2006 Québec Engineering Competition - Magnificent performances by Polytechnique teams
Consulting Engineering
The GT-UP Consulting Group team of Jonathan Arpin, Benjamin Desmarais, Antoine Lefaivre and Simon Lacasse won first place in
the Consulting Engineering category. "This year, the general problem was that Québec suffered major floods when the ice
melted," Benjamin explained. "We had to propose a solution to rebuild Québec's electrical network, carry out an economic
analysis, present the environmental and social impacts of the chosen solution and put forward a plan to reduce energy
consumption. We had four hours to come up with a solution and a maximum of 20 minutes to present it to the judges, who were all
from industry."
Junior Design
In the Junior Design category, students were given the challenge of designing a retractable bridge to take supplies to flood
survivors. The team made up of Alexandre Cooper, Emmanuel St-Aubin, Jonathan Daniel-Rivest and Frédéric Cyr came in first and
the team composed of Arthur Wozniak, Michaël Lapointe, Alexandre Villeneuve and Pierre-Paul Paquin took third place.
Debate
With their vitality, sharp analysis and sense of humour, Pascal Marchi and Fabrice
Fotso-Kengne won the Debate category. The Polytechnique team beat the Université Laval team in the final with to their
brilliant presentation of the following issue: "All politicians should be required to take an ethics course before running for
office."
Communications
Polytechique's Fabienne Dufour and Adeline Fleury came in third in the Communications category with their presentation on the
properties of DNA.
Canadian Engineering Competition
The Canadian Engineering Competition (CEC), where the best teams from the four regions in Canada will compete against one
another, will be held at École Polytechnique from March 9 to 12, 2006 under the theme "Build Your Own Path." Polytechnique will
be represented in the Extemporaneous Debate and Team Design categories. However, the team that came in first in the Consulting
Engineering category of the QEC will not be able to defend Polytechnique in this category given that some of its members are
also CEC organizers. For more information on the Canadian Engineering Competition, visit http://www.cci2006.ca/.
