Technology developed at Polytechnique Montréal being commercialized by Biomomentum

February 8, 2012 - Source : NEWS
In January, biotechnology company Biomomentum Inc. obtained a CE compliance marking from the European Union for the Arthro-BST, a technology developed in the mid-2000s by two doctoral students in biomedical engineering, Martin Garon and Éric Quenneville,  working in the Polytechnique Montréal laboratories under the supervision of Professor Michael Buschmann. This marking is in addition to the recent licensing of the product by Health Canada.

Biomomentum is a Québec company founded in 2009 by Messrs. Garon and Quenneville, who bought the patents stemming from their doctoral studies. This means it is a company headed by people convinced of what they're doing, since they originated the innovations they are bringing to market. This wonderful story begins with a meeting that would have a major impact on the lives of two graduating doctoral students at Polytechnique.

Engineer-entrepreneurs on the road to success

Biomomentum, grand prize winner in the Technological Innovation category in the 2010 Concours québécois en entreprenariat and in the Young Entrepreneurs category in the 2011 Prix Desjardins Entrepreneurs, is betting heavily on the Arthro-BST, a portable medical device used in an arthroscopy procedure for the non-destructive measurement of the electrical flow potentials induced during compression of the articular cartilage.

Mr. Quenneville, company co-founder and Chief Executive Officer, says: “These recent regulatory recognitions are major steps in the development of the Arthro-BST, and we are very proud to have advanced in this direction. This device is revolutionizing the arthroscopic characterization of cartilage by providing surgeons with a reliable quantitative assessment. Biomomentum is currently mobilizing its resources and working with the top orthopedic surgeons to institute a new paradigm and promote this product, which will radically transform orthopedic practices.”

Entrepreneurship & Innovation competition – Centre Entrepreneurship HEC-Poly-UdeM

Biomomentum was also the winner of the 2009 Entrepreneurship & Innovation competition, an initiative of the HEC-Polytechnique-Université de Montréal Centre d'entrepreneurship. This annual competition is intended to stimulate students' entrepreneurial spirit and has served to encourage the startup of young companies. Since 1998, this Centre has evaluated 710 projects and presented more than $1 million in awards.
