research ACTIVITIES : STUDENTS FROM OTHER INSTITUTIONS
RESEARCH ACTIVITIES AT Polytechnique
École Polytechnique’s research units welcome students from other institutions wishing to put into practise the technical and scientific knowledge acquired in their studies. Their time in our laboratories is an integral part of their education at their home institution.
To apply for admission, you must make direct contact with one or more Polytechnique professors working in the area of research that interests you. If the response is positive, you must then provide the professor with:
The professor will then complete an official application on your behalf. Following this, an official invitation letter will be issued by the professor's department, which you will receive by mail.
Please note! Exchange students coming to our institution must not have commenced their research prior to the exchange. The research activity can be carried out only during or following the exchange.
After receiving your letter of admission, you must take the requisite steps to prepare for your stay in Canada.
Please note! During this stay, the school will not consider you to have student status, therefore you need to get a Canadian work permit, whatever the length of your internship is.
A regular work permit requires :
You CANNOT get a LMO with an Internship at Polytechnique and the School won't collaborate in this procedure. You can therefore only get a work permit that is exempted from the LMO and CAQ.
Here are the different situations that can exempt you from LMO and CAQ:
- You are eligible to a Youth Mobility Program with Canada, also called "International Experience Canada" : see the conditions on the website of the program in your country, if it takes part in it.
- You are doing an internship within the IAESTE program.
- your home institution has an agreement with Polytechnique or takes part in the CREPUQ agreement. If this is the case, your invitation letter will mention it.
- You are the holder of a research scholarship granted for the quality of your academic career. (either by your home insitution, or by the Polytechnique professor inviting you, or by an external institution),
Exception: Students under military status can be exempted from work permit if their internship is the subject of a movement order from an institution coming under an army present in Canada (listed in section 3 of Citizenship and Immigration Canada IR1 manual). Their movement order should outline that they are coming to Canada from countries designated under the terms of the Canadian Visiting Forces Act.
Each professor is free to decide whether he will give financial support to the interns he supervises or not, in which form, and up to which amounts. This topic will be precised in your invitation letter. Here are the types of financial support that can be proposed to you:
- No financial support
- Refund of transportation and/or living expenses (originals of bills, plane tickets and boardig passes will be required)
- Grant of a research scholarship (an original proof of registration in you rhome institution, valid for the entire length of the internship will be required. If it does not mention your student ID number, an original document mentionning it will also be required.)
- Payment of a salary (you will therefore need to provide upon your arrival at Polytechnique a valid Canadian Social Insurance number (SIN). This number is different from the health insurance card number. To obtain a SIN, you must bring your study permit, passport and invitation letter to an office of Service Canada.
Polytechnique does not provide health insurance to its research interns. It is your own responsibility to get an appropriate health insurance for healthcare and hospitalization for your stay in Canada. If you cannot find such an insurance, a travel insurance (hospitalization and repatriation) is a strict minimum.
Insterns who are citizens of countries that have a social security agreement with Québec (Belgium, Denmark, Finland, France, Greece, Luxembourg, Norway, Portugal, Sweden) can be covered by Québec public Health Insurance - RAMQ (Régie d'Assurance Maladie du Québec) if they the meet the requirements. An attestation of the competent organization in you rhome country must be obtained before leaving (for the French holding a work permit, it is the form SE-401-Q104), and some procedures must be done at RAMQ upon your arrival.
You can book a room on campus in the residences of Université de Montréal, by contacting them directly. There are more availabilities between May 1st and August 24th.

For more information on these procedures, please contact the director's assistant of the home department of the professor supervising your internship.
