Our mission
To develop new fabrication techniques and new materials for thin film systems and coatings possessing tailored optical, optoelectronical, micro- and nano-mechanical, tribological, protective properties and other desirable characteristics. The research is focused on understanding and controlling thin film growth and on surface and interface engineering, as well as on the metrology of coating properties for their application in different areas such as optics, photonics, optoelectronics, aerospace, biomedicine, automobile industry, security and others.

DIRECTOR - PROFESSEUR LUDVIK MARTINU

He obtained his Master's and PhD degrees in Physics from Charles University in Prague in 1981 and 1985. He worked as researcher at Charles University and at the University of Bari, Italy. He joined Polytechnique Montreal in 1988, where he became Associate Professor and Full Professor. From 2004 till 2010, he was Head of the Department of Engineering Physics. Since 2010, he is Associate Director of the university's Thin Film Research Center.
The main research interest of L. Martinu is surface engineering and the physics and technology of thin films for optics, photonics, security, energy, aerospace, biomedical, and other applications. This particularly includes new vacuum- and plasma-based ("green" = non-polluting, environmentally friendly) fabrication processes, nano-structured film materials and coating systems, smart materials, and characterization techniques for optical and multi-functional coatings, hard tribological coatings, and thin film devices.
He is and has been very active in different scientific societies (Society of Vacuum Coaters - SVC, American Vacuum Society - AVS, Sigma Xi - The Scientific Research Society) and as organizer or co-organizer of numerous international symposia including the Symposium on Functional Coatings and Surface Engineering (Montreal 2001, 2003, 2005, 2008, 2011, 2014), the International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF), the SVC Annual Technical Conferences, Topical Meetings of the Optical Society of America (OSA) and of the International Society for Optical Engineering (SPIE), and others.
He is founder and Director of the Functional Coating and Surface Engineering Laboratory at Ecole Polytechnique, co-founder of the Laboratory for Optical and tribo-mechanical metrology, and he is author or co-author of more than 340 publications and of 7 patents and announcements of invention.

CO-DIRECTOR - PROFESSOR JOLANTA KLEMBERG-SAPIEHA
Jolanta E. Klemberg-Sapieha is Associate Professor at Ecole Polytechnique Montreal.
She obtained her Master's and PhD degrees in Chemical Engineering and in Materials Engineering from the Technical University in Lodz, Poland. She joined Ecole Polytechnique in 1978, where she is now co-founder and Director of the Laboratory for Optical and Tribo-mechanical Metrology (LOTM), Associate Director of the Functional Coating and Surface Engineering Laboratory, and Principal Collaborator of the NSERC Multisectorial Industrial Research Chair in Coatings and Surface Engineering within the Department of Engineering Physics.
The main research interests of J.E. Klemberg-Sapieha are the science and technology of thin films, surfaces, interfaces and coating systems. She has particularly contributed to the field of hard and superhard protective coatings, tribological coatings, mechanical and tribo-corrosion properties of materials, coatings on plastics, and surface and interface analysis in the context of aerospace, manufacturing, bio-medical, optical, automotive and other applications. Her research resulted in more than 280 publications, and in 6 patents and announcements of invention.
She is very active in different research organizations including the Society of Vacuum Coaters (SVC) and the American Vacuum Society (AVS – board member of the Surface Engineering Division). She has been organizer and co-organizer of numerous international conferences including the Symposium on Functional Coatings and Surface Engineering, the International Conference on Metallurgical Coatings and Thin Films (ICMCTF), and the SVC Annual Technical Conferences.
