Surrogate Measures of Safety/Interaction Similarity
Objectives
General objective: characterize interaction similarities to better predict safety (expected number of accidents) and understand collision processes and factors
Additional specific objectives include the definition and investigation of exposure in terms of interaction, and a way to characterize safe and normal interactions in facilities where the right of way involves explicit and aware road user interaction
Methodology
An initial avenue is to define interactions in a way that includes conflicts and accidents. An example is the definition used in older work as two road users being simultaneously within some predefined distance. Another is "all events where the minimum time to collision" was below some threshold, which includes accidents and probably most conflict definitions.
