Gilles Savard, PhD., Full Professor

GILLES SAVARD, PH. D., PROFESSEUR TITULAIRE

Gilles Savard is currently Acting President of Polytechnique Montréal for a term ending January 7, 2022.

Thereafter (from January 8, 2022 onward), he will occupy the functions of Interim President until the next incumbent takes office.

Biography

Gilles Savard holds a PhD (1989) in Operations Research and a Master's in Applied Sciences (1984), both from Polytechnique Montréal. He began his academic career as a professor at the Collège militaire de Saint-Jean in 1988.

In 1993, Professor Savard joined the Department of Applied Mathematics at Polytechnique Montréal. He served as Department Head from 2001 to 2007 and was Director of Research, Innovation and International Affairs from 2007 to 2017. Subsequently, Mr. Savard served as General Director of the Institute for Data Development (IVADO) from 2017 to 2021.

Professor Savard has had an admirable career in teaching, as well as in basic and applied research. He has published over 100 scientific papers in leading operations research journals, has led highly-qualified teams, and supervised some 80 students.

Gilles Savard is a recognized specialist in bilevel mathematical programming, and has contributed to the development of an innovative revenue management methodology used by transportation and energy companies.

Professor Savard has received numerous awards and distinctions over the years. In 1999, the EUGENE project won the Best Operations Research Application Award from the Canadian Operations Research Society. In 2010, he was honored by the Association pour le développement de la recherche et de l'innovation du Québec (ADRIQ) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC) for the quality of his partnerships with the Polytechnique spin-off ExPretio Technologies Inc. which he co-founded. In 2017, Gilles Savard received the ADRIQ Prix de l’innovation personnalité. In 2018, he was awarded the title of Chevalier de l'ordre des Palmes académiques de la République française. Professor Savard is also a member of several committees and boards of directors in Canada and in France.
