Composite manufacturing, Liquid Composite Molding (LCM), Flexible Injection (FI), Process simulation and optimisation, Shape Memory Alloys (SMA)

Dr. François TROCHU is professor of Mechanical Engineering at Ecole Polytechnique de Montréal. After graduating in 1974 from Ecole Polytechnique in Paris, he obtained his Master degree in Aerospace Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin in 1975. He worked several years as research engineer and consultant in applied numerical methods. In 1990, he received his Ph.D. from Ecole Polytechnique, Montréal, where his main field of research was random finite elements and probabilistic modeling. Now full professor, he is currently working on the numerical simulation of injection molding in composite manufacturing by Liquid Composite Molding (LCM), Resin Transfer Molding (RTM) and on Shape Memory Alloys. F. Trochu has published over 80 papers in scientific journals and presented articles in more than one hundred international conferences. The software module LCMFLOT, developed by the team of prof. F. Trochu to simulate RTM and LCM manufacturing processes for composites, is now commercially used under the name PAM-RTM in several industrial sectors, mainly in the automotive industry (BMW, Ford, Visteon, etc.) and the aerospace field (EADS, Dassault-Aviation, Bell Hélicoptère, etc.).

Actual research interests

  • Development of software to simulate resin injection through continuous fiber beds: Liquid Composite Molding (LCM), “Resin Trransfer Molding” (RTM)
  • Applications of kriging in engineering
  • Development of industrial applications of shape memory alloys (SMA) and of composites with SMA active elements
  • Measurement of the permeability of continuous fibrous reinforcements
  • Finite element software based on oriented object design in C++
  • Injection control and optimization of RTM molds
