Surface engineering

Prof. Tavares holds both a bachelor’s degree and a Ph.D. in Chemical Engineering from McGill University, having specialized his studies in surface modification, plasma processing and particle dispersion. As an Assistant Professor of Chemical Engineering at PM, he is currently head of the PhotoSEL (photochemical surface engineering laboratory). His current research interests focus on the low-cost modification of surfaces through PICVD. He also has strong background in industrial research and development, having worked in the private sector as a product development scientist for a local environmental engineering firm.

Actual research interests

  • Surface engineering (gas-phase photochemistry, solvent-base patterning)
  • Nanoparticle stabilization, to prevent and reverse agglomeration
  • Bridging the gap between small scale nanofabrication and large scale nanomanufacturing
  • Gas phase treatment methods (PICVD, chemical reactions, plasma)
  • Valorization of domestic and industrial waste streams
  • Health and safety aspects of nanomaterials
  • Identification of low-cost nanoparticle sources
  • Biocompatibility of materials destined for implantation

  • Methods for the photo-initiated chemical vapor deposition (PICVD) of coatings and coatings produced by the methods
  • Method to maximize energy recovery in waste-to-energy processes
