The Department of Mechanical Engineering has currently 43 professors and 4 faculty lecturers, 27 technical and administrative support staff, several postdoctoral fellows, researchers and research associates. This position falls within the area of the TransMedTech institute in biomedical engineering and technologies sponsored by a significant grant of 35.6M$ from the Canada First Research Excellence Fund, and 60M$ from different partners. The chair will benefit from the exceptional environment offered by the TransMedTech LivingLab, an open innovation ecosystem. The LivingLab includes researchers from various Polytechnique Montréal departments and its partner institutions (Université de Montréal and Montréal-area hospitals). Successful candidates will also benefit from the environment and infrastructure of the Technopôle en réadaptation of CHU Ste-Justine, an opened co-creative and innovative space allowing researchers, clinicians, partners, patients and their family to share knowledge and sustain advanced innovative technological developments. Successful candidates will be expected to carry out the duties of these positions with a dynamic and creative approach. In particular, they will:
- teach undergraduate courses in mechanical and biomedical engineering as well as graduate courses in its area of expertise;
- supervise graduate students;
- initiate and carry out collaborative research with other teams from Polytechnique, the institute TransMedTech, the Technopôle en réadaptation pédiatrique and other industrial/hospital partners
- contribute to the society at the local, national and international levels.
Area of expertise
Because of its particular affiliation, the research activities of the candidate must be in adequacy with those of the mechanical engineering department, the TransMedTech institute and the Technopôle en réadaptation pédiatrique of the CHU Ste-Justine.
A successful candidate should have knowledge in several areas of innovative technologies and interventions of rehabilitation of musculoskeletal disorders such as the design of custom orthotics, intelligent prostheses and rehabilitation assistance systems, based on biomechanical assessment and motion analysis, simulations and innovative robotic devices; the integration of sensors with virtual/augmented reality; human/machine interaction and optimization of materials, topology, comfort and rehabilitation processes. The professor's research will focus on the development of biomechanical technologies and technological rehabilitative innovations that will address musculoskeletal diseases.
Winter 2019 or as soon as possible.
A successful candidate must have a multidisciplinary background in engineering and biosciences, as well as a PhD/post-doctorate degree in relation to rehabilitation technologies. She/he must be registered as an engineer to the Ordre des Ingénieurs du Québec (or another equivalent body in Canada related to the engineering profession) or demonstrate her/his capacity to become one before applying for tenure. She/he must demonstrate excellent skills in research and teaching. Since the language of teaching is French, the selected person must have sufficient French speaking and writing ability shortly after taking office.
