Normand Mousseau, directeur scientifique de l'Institut de l'énergie Trottier, considère que le terme « pétrole décarboné » n’est pas totalement trompeur, mais qu’il prête à confusion puisqu’il ne reflète qu’une réduction des émissions à l’étape de production, alors que la majorité des émissions surviennent lors de la combustion, ce qui rend cette notion incompatible avec les objectifs climatiques.
