Tax credit when hiring an intern
Tax credit for workplace internship

For a private business (company or individual) that hires a student for an internship credited by and registered with Polytechnique.

Tax credit for private company:

  • Regular: maximum of $144 a week, per intern
  • Immigrant: maximum of $192 a week, per intern
  • Person with a disability: maximum of $240 a week, per intern
  • NOTE: For an employer who is an individual: half of these amounts
Calculating the amount ot the refundable tax credit
Step 1 Calculate eligible expenses (for each week of the internship)

Improvement to the tax credit for workplace internship

If your company is in its 3rd consecutive taxation year for which he is entitled to the tax credit under this program, you may qualify for an improvement of the tax credit (up to 40%).

Terms:

  • the eligible expenses were incurred after March 26, 2015, as part of an internship that began after that date;
  • the tax or fiscal year is at least the third consecutive tax or fiscal year in which the company is entitled to a tax credit in relation to a student intern;
  • during each of three consecutive tax years, or each of three consecutive fiscal years, the company has incurred eligible expenses for a minimum of $ 2 500 to the respect of a student intern.

Bill 90 – 1% of payroll on training (Emploi Québec)
  • For the company that has not spent 1% of its payroll on training activities.
  • The intern’s salary and the time a supervisor must invest in intern supervision may be included in the calculation of the 1%.
  • Can be combined with the Tax Credit for an On-the-Job Training Period (MÉQ).
  • Transferable amount = expenses (intern’s salary + guidance by supervisor) minus the tax credit claimed ($144 a week)

Subsidy when hiring an intern

Employment and Social Development Canada Student Internship Program

The Student Internship Program enables post-secondary students in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) and business administration programs to gain paid work experience related to their field of study. 'study.
More than 11,500 paid student internships will be created under the program by 2021.

Amount of subsidies

The student must be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident or have refugee status.

2 - Biotalent

PREREQUISITES: To be eligible for the program, the internship must focus on the bioeconomy or be offered by an employer in the biotechnology or health technology sector. Please also see the Participant information page for participant eligibility.

The company must:

  • Provide a full-time work opportunity for a minimum of 16 weeks, 5 days a week, 7.5 hours a day;
  • Not recruit and retain friends or family members as participants to the co-op wage subsidy program;
  • Reference the participant information web page to inform potential participants what their involvement in
  • the co-op wage subsidy program will entail;
  • Provide proof of co-op placement employment, start date, contract with participant, full wage and benefits
  • of participant to BioTalent Canada upon request;
  • Provide information about the placement to BioTalent Canada as required;
  • Develop a Formal Learning Plan with the participant, before the start of the placement;
  • Provide BioTalent Canada with monthly financial claims and progress reports; and
  • Enter into a Placement Contract with BioTalent Canada before the participant’s co-op placement starts.

3 - CCAA SWILP

PREREQUISITE: Be in an aviation or aerospace organization; cannot be a research position in a school lab

  • Complete and sign the Employer information form.
  • Provide a brief company description.
  • Provide proof of the participant’s PSE enrollment/transcript.
  • Provide the participant’s job description.
  • Provide the participant’s working/learning plan***
  • Provide proof of placement employment, start date, contract with participant, full wage and benefits of participant to CCAA.

4 - Electricity human ressources Canada

A work-integrated learning opportunity is any placement including co-ops, internships, field placements, applied projects, capstone projects or case competitions. These placements are provided to full-time students looking to gain field experience through a formal or informal placement.

The application process requires filling out three online forms:

  1. the Employer Information Form,
  2. the Participant (student) form, and
  3. the Learning Plan. Once the first two have been completed and meet all requirements, we create a contract (to be signed by the student, their employer, and Electricity Human Resources Canada) and a work-integrating learning agreement document (to be signed by the student and their post-secondary educational institution).

5 - Mining industry MIHR

Equip the next generation is the integrated workplace learning program for Canada's mining sector.

PREREQUISITES: Employers belonging to Canadian interests or to a Canadian subsidiary working in the field of mining or mineral exploration.

The program offers wage subsidies of up to $ 7,000 to mining employers who create new opportunities

workplace integrated learning and jobs for new graduates, for students enrolled in science, technology, engineering and

mathematics (STEM) or in commerce.

6 - ECO Canada

Since 1992, ECO Canada a profit-free organization dedicated to the development of careers in Environment and today, thanks to the federal government, we are able to extend these internships to students of all STIMA and Business sectors (Science, Technology, Engineering , Mathematics, Art) on positions related to the environment.

The procedure is simple and fast :

For each internship, ECO Canada will finance 50% of gross salary and expenses (AE + RQQ) up to $ 5000 for a duration between 6 to 16 weeks full or part time.

7 - Work-Integrated Learning Program (ICTC)

The national CTIC program aims to develop talent for emerging ICT sectors, support businesses, and increase digital adoption in Canada. Here are some highlights from the work-integrated learning program.

  • The program provides opportunities for students to work, learn while working and contribute to the success of their employers.
  • It offers grants to employers that create job opportunities for students;
  • It creates partnerships between industry and the education community and explores innovative models of work-integrated learning.
  • It is funded by the Government of Canada's Workplace Integrated Learning Program for Students.

Work-integrated learning program grants are available to eligible businesses across Canada to hire eligible students for placements. A grant offers one of the following possibilities .

  • 50% of wages paid during a period not exceeding 4 months (approximately 16 weeks), the threshold being $ 5,000; or
  • 70% of wages paid over a period not exceeding 4 months (approximately 16 weeks), the threshold being $ 7,000, for employers who hire students from one of the under-represented groups, namely women in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), Aboriginals, recent immigrants (arrived in the last 5 years), people with disabilities and first year students.

Determine student eligibility Students must meet the following criteria to be eligible for a wage subsidy:
1. be enrolled as a student at a post-secondary institution in a STEM, social science, management, arts or vocational program, regardless of age;
2. be a Canadian citizen, a permanent resident or a protected person within the meaning of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act and be legally authorized to work under the laws and regulations of the province.

Financial aid for recent graduates

Tax credit for recent graduates working in remote resource regions.

  • You can claim this credit if you meet all the following conditions:
    • You reside in a remote resource region of Québec as at December 31 of the year covered by the claim;
    • You held an eligible job during the year;
    • You received an eligible salary during the year.
  • This credit is equal to 40% of the eligible salary but may not exceed $8,000.

Hiring a graduate (financial aid for employers)
Your 1st job in aerospace (CAMAQ)
  • This project, funded in part by the Government of Canada’s Youth Employment Strategy, is a $4M investment in the Quebec aerospace industry. The Center for Aerospace Manpower Activities in Quebec (CAMAQ) are the project manager.
  • This program subsidizes 50% of the employee’s hourly rate up to $10.75 an hour and 40 hours a week, for a maximum of 48 weeks. Please note that graduating students who need to complete only the mandatory end-of-study internship are also eligible.

Youth Employment Program (NRCC)
  • Technology companies with fewer than 500 employees are eligible; project must be related to technology (it is considered an asset if the project is a new activity for the company)

INCENTIVE PROGRAM FOR WELCOMING TRAINEES (PIAS)

The “Welcome a Trainee” program, initiated by the Federation of Chambers of Commerce of Quebec (FCCQ) is available in the Montreal region. This program aims to alleviate the difficulties of recruiting companies, due to a scarcity of manpower, by raising awareness about the reception of trainees. It allows companies to benefit from support, both to inform you of the advantages and financial measures available at the reception of interns and to assist you in administrative procedures. In addition, we help businesses obtain the $ 3,000 to $ 5,000 grant awarded by the Labor Market Partners Commission (CPMT). Of course, this is a free service accessible to all businesses in the region.

Foster a better match between professional, technical or university training and the constantly changing needs of the labor market by increasing the opportunities for rapprochement between educational establishments and businesses.

For professional level internships:

  • $ 3000 grant for internships of less than 300h internship
  • $ 4,000 grant for internships between 300h and 540h
  • $ 5,000 grant for internships longer than 540h

Eligible types of internship

Skills development internship: Develop, in the workplace, one or more skills targeted by a study program. The workplace is used to help achieve certain goals of the curriculum.

Skills implementation internship: Allows you to use, in the exercise of a profession or a trade, one or more skills already acquired and certified as part of a study program.
