COMMUNIQUÉ Esteban takes part to the Canadian Solar Tour

As part of the Canadian Solar Tour, six solar vehicles from Quebec and Ontario universities will cover over 1 700 km from Windsor to Québec City from August 12 to 21, 2004. The École Polytechnique's Team Esteban will be one of those taking part. The other institutions to be represented include the École de technologie supérieure, McGill University, Queen's University, the University of Toronto and McMaster University.

The Tour's twofold goal is to promote Canadian innovations and educational excellence in Canada, while raising public awareness of the need for renewable energy and energy management. It is no coincidence, then, that the tour will be passing through Toronto on August 14 and 15--the same dates on which the major blackout occurred in northeastern North America last year. It is also worth pointing out that this event is occurring during a critical phase in the discussions about the Suroît thermal power plant.

Rallying teams from the two provinces, the Tour has a further goal: to encourage greater cooperation between students and universities in order to, among other things, increase the size and prestige of interuniversity competitions.

The tour's itinerary is as follows:

  • Thursday, August 12: Windsor - Sarnia - London
  • Friday, August 13: Stratford - Waterloo - Hamilton - Burlington - Mississauga
  • Saturday, August 14: Toronto, Queen's Park and Nathan Philips Square
  • Sunday, August 15: Toronto, Ontario Science Centre
  • Monday, August 16: Toronto - Kingston
  • Tuesday, August 17: Kingston - Ottawa
  • Wednesday, August 18: Ottawa - Montréal
  • Thursday, August 19: Montréal
  • Friday, August 20: Montréal, Centre des sciences (Vieux-Port) - Sherbrooke - Shawinigan
  • Saturday, August 21: Shawinigan - Québec City

École Polytechnique's solar vehicle

Founded in 1873, École Polytechnique de Montréal is one of Canada's leading engineering institutions, in terms of both teaching and research. It is the largest engineering school in Québec as far as its student population and the scope of its research activity are concerned. École Polytechnique provides instruction in 11 engineering specialties and is responsible for more than one-quarter of university research in engineering in Québec. The school has 220 professors and nearly 6,000 students. Its operating budget is $72 million, in addition to a $40-million research and infrastructure fund. Polytechnique is affiliated with Université de Montréal.
