Objectives

The chair has six primary objectives:

1. Contribute to the advancement of knowledge in project planning and control;
2. Create a regrouping and exchange platform of new knowledge, practices, and engineering project management models including strong international dimensions as regards their realization;
3. Develop formation and transfer activities contributing to the development of a qualified reliefas well as the formation of project management professionals;
4. Support the establishment of a greater proximity between practitioners and applied scientists through direct involvements of professionals in research projects;
5. Develop decision support tools being integrated into current project planning information systems;
6. Contribute to the international influence of a Canadian know-how as regards international project management.

Research program

The Chair's research program is articulated around the following research orientations:

Orientation 1 – International project planning: This first research orientation relates to forecasting and planning issue encountered in international projects. From the practical point of view, these research area aims at the development of robustness and interdependence measures between projects (resources, supply, equipment, expertise,…) and the development of forecasting and aggregate planning methods suitable for the dynamic and variable context of international project management.

Orientation 2 – International project scheduling: This research orientation aims at studying the performance of current project scheduling methods in an international context and at developing approaches more suitable for this context. In particular, this axis relates to the taking into consideration of logistic operations, such as plant and building site production, transport, and storage of project material, in the process of international project scheduling. On the practical level, project scheduling models with resource, storage, and supply delay time constraints are developed. Proactive scheduling methods, aiming at creating robust project plans able to absorb various types of hazards during the execution phase, will be also developed.

Orientation 3 – International project control and rescheduling: This research orientation relates to project reactive scheduling and control mechanisms carried out partly or entirely abroad. From the practical point of view, these works will be able to allow the development of rescheduling and impact analysis tools able to measure the feasibility and the robustness of corrective actions following disturbances.

Orientation 4 – Information systems in project planning: This axis primarily aims at studying the current project management information systems and to define approaches for integrating models and techniques developed within the research orientations 1, 2, and 3.
