Renewing your papers and permits

Introduction

Your authorization to stay in Canada is valid for a fixed period*. If you want to prolong your study period, you need to renew your papers. It is recommended that you start proceedings a minimum of four months prior to the expiration of your current papers.

Please note that, for authorization to be valid for a given semester, it must cover the full semester from first to last dates, no matter what program you are in. For instance, a research-based master’s student must hold a valid CAQ and study permit for the entire semester, even if he or she expects to complete studies before the last day of the semester.

Another example: a student whose CAQ and/or study permit expires in February must start proceedings early enough so that the new permit covers the entire semester, i.e. from its first to last day (early January through early May). Accordingly, he ors he is best advised to apply for renewal in October.

Students whose papers expire mid-semester must begin renewal proceedings before the start of that semester to ensure that the new permit covers the entire semester. If not, the Registrar’s Office may cancel the student’s registration in the courses for that semester.

If you intend to travel outside of Canada during the period when your CAQ/study permit expires, plan on renewing your papers sufficiently in advance. If you do not have your new papers before you leave, you may lose your entitlement to study when you return.

Attention!

Don’t forget to show any renewals to the Registrar’s Office to keep your file up to date. If your renewal applications are still in process, you need to inform the office.

*The CAQ is valid for a designated level of education.  If you move to a different level, you must have your CAQ modified accordingly and show it to the Registrar’s Office.
