Students with a satisfactory GPA after 90 credits must find a professor who will agree to supervise their work for the remaining 60 credits if they are accepted into the integrated bachelor's–master's stream. Before approving the student’s study plan, the professor (academic or research supervisor), in collaboration with the person in charge of the undergraduate program in question, must ensure the coherence of all 150 credits of the student’s study plan. In all cases, students must complete the Registrar’s Office form “Plan d’études BMI” which must be signed by the appropriate academic or research supervisor and graduate studies coordinator.

The direct entry from the bachelor’s to the doctorate degree allows the student to start his doctoral studies as soon as he completes his bachelor’s degree in engineering, without having to complete a master’s degree. Polytechnique Montréal has complete autonomy when analyzing applications for admission. Only the Office of the Registrar is authorized to make decisions regarding admission into any of the school’s programs.
Diplomas required for admission to the DESS or master’s program are eligible only if they entail a minimum of four years’ education following completion of secondary school, even if this is not specified. Diplomas required for admission to the PhD program are eligible only if they entail a minimum of six years education following completion of secondary school, with the exception of an engineering degree, for which only five years and an excellent academic record with a minimal average of 3.2/4.0 are required.
Candidates seeking to be admitted as independent students must have had adequate prior training and be in good academic standing. Professional experience may also be taken into account. The institution cannot guarantee independent students access to all regular courses. Some courses, due to their nature and admission requirements, must necessarily give priority to students who are enrolled in the program
Candidates seeking to be admitted as visiting or auditing students must have had prior training that will enable them to benefit from the desired courses to be taken.
