Technical card

The 2009 Global Green Challenge’s new regulations has maked us change many important features of the Esteban IV vehicule that we are optimizing. Since we were making a new car, we decided to change category, so the 8 squared meters has been reduced to 6 squared meters of solar cells. Also, the regulation has changed to a minimum seating angle to 27° from the vertical axis. Both of those changes are part of many changes that we will make us able to design and build a new solar car that has more similarities to a conventional car than a race machine.

General Specifications

Total length: 4.76 m
Total width : 1.68 m
Total height : 1.40 m
Height under the shell: 0.3 m

Estimated weight: 300kg (with a driver of 80kg)

Solar cells: 6m²

Battery: 4167 W.h

Average estimated speed: 65 Km/h
Maximum speed: 120 Km/h

Mechanical systems

Suspension of Esteban IV and V

The mechanical systems are entirely conceived by Esteban's members, in collaboration with professors at university and from the industry.

The vehicle has a regenerative breaking system but it is also equipped with disc breaks on the front wheels. Also, it has "double triangulation" suspensions at the front wheels and a "swing arm" for the back wheel.

Shell

The shell under construction...

The Esteban's shell will be constructed by infusion, made of kevlar, carbon and glass fibers.

Length: 4.76 m
Width: 1.68 m
Estimated weight: 80 Kg

Structure

No top or bottom shell car!

The tubular structure has been designed and built according to strict security criterions and the seating angle of the new design has been changed to meet with the new regulations of 27 degrees from the vertical axis.

Electrical systems

The motor:

The motor of the solar vehicle

Esteban's motor is a in-hub electrical motor produced by BionX, a manufacturer of electrical bikes. Here are some specifications of the motor:

  • 3-phase synchronous motor
  • Brushless, permanent magnets motor
  • Nominal power: 1200W (1.5 HP)
  • Maximal power: 6000W (8 HP)
  • Maximal torque: 150 Nm
  • Efficiency of 97%

This motor also has a regenerative breaking to get some electrical energy back while breaking.

The solar cells:

solar cells of EstebanV

The solar array of the car is composed of 384 monocrystalline solar cells of TDB125 type from our exclusive Golden Partnership China Sunergy. With an average efficiency of 18%, we will have a total power of 1080 W at an Irradiance of 1000W/m², but we can achieve more in peak Irradiance hours in the desert of Australia..

The battery :

La battery of the solar car

The battery used by the solar car is a Lithium Ion Polymer battery manufactured by LTC (Lithium Technology Corporation). It is composed of 66 cells of 3.6V and 16.5Ah. In total, the battery has a nominal voltage of 130V and a capacity of 33Ah. With only 25 kg of battery weight, the car would have autonomy of around 3 hours with a covered sky.
