Step 1. Toward the Comprehensive Examination (4 Required credits)

CAP7001E Ensuring a successful doctorate (1, 0, 2)

Characteristics of a quality doctorate. Skills to develop. Milestones of the doctoral pathway: Comprehensive exam, first publication, defense (classic thesis or dissertation by articles), towards the first job. Pitfalls to avoid. Expected deliverables. Formulation of doctorate quality criteria and means to achieve them. Scientific aspects: original contribution, approach and scientific writing, technological innovation, interdisciplinary discussion. Personal aspects: motivation, time and priority management. Professional aspects: competencies to develop, resources to mobilize, networking, preparing for the career after doctorate. Experience sharing from seasoned researchers.

CAP7005E Handling of scientific and technical information (1, 0, 2)

Identifying different sources of scientific and technical information. Defining a need for information. Search, retrieval and filtering techniques of information. Strategies, approaches and tools to perform a literature review and to determine the technological state of the art. Techniques to optimize information search. Management methods (organize-find-monitor) for gathered and created information. Ethical and legal use and treatment of information. Dissemination and valorisation of relevant information. Implementation of monitoring activities. Principles of critical analysis of a scientific article. Application to a research project.

CAP7010E Creativity: yes you can (1, 0, 2)

Definition of creativity. Steps for creativity: preparation, incubation, illumination and validation. Examples of discoveries. The four dimensions of intelligence: deduction, intuition, collective intelligence and creativity. Barriers to creativity: education, habits, expertise, judgment and admissibility. Approaches to stimulate scientific creativity: exploration, reformulation, generation of ideas, selection, testing-experimentation and organization. Confrontation of ideas. Application to the research context. Thoughts organization. Critical judgment. From idea to written expression. Approaches to formulate research questions, specific objectives or scientific hypotheses. Assessment of originality, uncertainty, risk, feasibility. Organizing ideas toward writing. Structure of argumentation.

CAP7015E Leading a research project (1, 0, 2)

Major steps in carrying out research project: emergence and definition, planning and organization, execution, monitoring and completion. Generating and defining an original project. Planning and organization: research strategy; selection of tools and methods; types of activities and work breakdown structure; resources, deliverables, and timelines. Implementation, monitoring, and completion: starting the project, best practices, critical progress assessment, completion of a research project, networking, communication, and documentation. Management of risks, time, and priorities: risks inherent to an original research project with uncertain outcomes; locks, conflicts and delays, management of time and priorities; integration of ethics in research activities. Writing a research proposal.
Note: It is strongly recommended to have previously completed CAP7001, CAP7005, and CAP7010.
