Polytechnique Montréal is one of Canada’s leading engineering teaching and research institutions, with over 7,500 students and over 1,000 employees. Its Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering is seeking candidates to fill two positions, one as professor of applied mathematics and the other as professor of industrial engineering.
With 46 professors and 9 teachers, the Department of Mathematics and Industrial Engineering dispenses all of the school’s service courses in mathematics and complementary studies, an undergraduate program, professional master’s course and specialized graduate programs (DESS) in industrial engineering, and master’s research and doctoral programs in industrial engineering and applied mathematics.
Area of expertise: Operational research and data science
Knowledge integration and convergence in the fields of operational research, data science and machine learning are at the heart of leading-edge developments in big data mining, and thus of very important research conducted at Polytechnique Montréal and elsewhere on the Université de Montréal campus as part of the Institute for Data Valorization (IVADO – https://ivado.ca/) and its ongoing APOGÉE project.
Candidates must be able to contribute significantly to the development of new methodological knowledge on the frontier of operational research and data science for the purpose of using big data as a tool in decision-making and optimization. To that end, they must have solid expertise in at least one of the fields concerned and be prepared to work in concert with experts in other disciplines in order to achieve the desired methodological advances. It would also be desirable that the candidates’ research activities have an impact on some of the practical areas of interest to IVADO: transportation and logistics, energy, health and finance.
The professor must energetically and creatively perform the position’s tasks, including: participating in teaching at the undergraduate and graduate levels, supervising graduate students, conducting innovative research projects, and collaborating with internal research teams and with industry. The professor must be able to develop an original and multidisciplinary research program, integrated with the Department’s activities and those of the Institute for Data Valorization.
Applicants must hold a doctorate (Ph.D.) in a relevant field: operational research, applied mathematics, statistics, data science, data processing or a related subject. O.I.Q. membership or the prospect of acquiring it is an asset.
Applicants must have a sufficiently extensive research record to demonstrate their ability to develop and lead an independent research program, which will enable the successful applicant to obtain funding and effectively supervise graduate students. Applicants must also demonstrate excellent teaching skills, confirmed if possible by teaching evaluations. Industrial experience is an asset. Since the language of instruction is French, the candidates must demonstrate proficiency in French or the willingness to acquire a working knowledge of French before obtaining tenure.
Conditions of employment
This faculty position is tenure-track. Salary and benefits will be set in accordance with the collective agreement in effect. The latter includes arrangements for work-life balance and offers maternity, paternity and adoption leave in addition to the Québec Parental Insurance Plan.
The new professor will have dedicated funding to help launch his or her research activities.
Applicants are invited to submit their curriculum vitae, a statement of their teaching goals and research priorities, official records of their diplomas, the names of three references, a few examples of work relevant to the position, and reprints of recent publications. Applications must be sent to:
