The Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) is a non-profit organization and the world's leading professional association working toward the advancement of technology.

At the administrative committee meeting held in October in Rome, Professor Ke Wu was elected 2016 President of the IEEE's Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). He will also act as President-designate for the 2015 IEEE MTT-S. In the organization's 60+-year history, Professor Ke is its third non-American president. The organization is present all over the world, with 170 chapters. He is the first
Canadian to hold this position.

Born in China, Ke Wu has been a professor in Polytechnique Montréal's Department of Electrical Engineering since 1992. He is behind some 30 major inventions in the field of wireless technology that have made an impact on every sphere of activity in today's society. His work focuses on millimetric and terahertz waves, which could make it possible, for example, to recharge or power mobile devices with energy from the air around us, carried by electromagnetic waves.

Professor Ke has countless accomplishments to his credit. Among others, he helped organize the 2012 IEEE MTT-S international symposium in Montréal, the biggest international gathering of engineers specializing in the field of microwaves. He has published nearly 1,000 articles in internationally renowned scientific journals and conference proceedings, and he is among the most cited researchers in his specialty, with over 15,700 citations.

A devoted teacher, Professor Ke has supervised more than 150 budding engineers, over 130 master's and doctoral students, and more than 30 postdoctoral fellows. His numerous distinctions include the 2013 Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal. He also took home this year's IEEE MTT-S Microwave Application Award and recently won the 2014 Prix Marie-Victorin at the Prix du Québec in the science category.

The MTT-S is the biggest society for the promotion of the theory and applications of RF, microwaves, millimetric waves and terahertz technologies. It boasts over 11,000 members from all over the world, from within academia, industry and government. It was founded in 1952. The MTT-S is one of the biggest societies among the 45 that are part of the IEEE.

Our heartiest congratulations on this appointment, which brings great honour to the Department of Electrical Engineering, to Polytechnique and to Canada.
