Philippe A. Tanguy, professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering, was recently appointed to the founding commission of the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology. The commission is responsible for creating the Académie des sciences du Maroc, consisting of at least six colleges, including an "engineering and technology transfer college" where Professor Tanguy plans to focus his energies.

Members of the Hassan II Academy of Science and Technology are mandated by King Mohammed VI to reflect upon, direct, finance and evaluate science policies in Morocco. Morocco presently ranks third in Africa in terms of scientific publications, behind South Africa and Egypt.
