EndNote
FAQ
- Can I use EndNote at home?
The EndNote installation CD can be borrowed from the Circulation Desk. The program can be installed on both institutional and personal computers, provided the user signs a license agreement and agrees to uninstall the program at the request of a Polytechnique staff member or upon leaving the school.
- Can I use EndNote with BibTeX/LaTeX?
The Library provides a guide in French on how to produce reference lists with BibTex/LaTex. This guide includes a section explaining how to use an EndNote library with BibTex and the open source reference manager JabRef. EndNote’s producer, Thomson Reuters provides support for using BibTex and EndNote together. More information at ftp://support.isiresearchsoft.com/pub/bibtex/.
- How can I convert my ProCite database to EndNote?
ProCite databases can be converted to EndNote libraries, but the number and quality of the records may affect the transfer. Refer to the Thomson Reuters EndNote user manual under "Creating a Library from ProCite" (p. 32).
- Can I open my EndNote library created in a previous version of EndNote with X5?
Previous versions are compatible with the current one. However, once an older library has been opened and used with EndNote X5, it is recommended to use it only with this new version.
- How do I use EndNote in a research group?
If you want to use EndNote in a group project, it is recommended to appoint one person in charge of the main reference library, who will make sure that a backup copy is available at all times. The library can be saved as a read-only file for use by other group members. Each member can be assigned a code in the Notes field corresponding to the references of their choice. Groups must develop their own guidelines and ensure that members abide by them. For more information, communicate with Polytechnique's Contact Persons.
- How much memory does an EndNote library use?
It depends on the number of references in the library. An EndNote .enl file containing 100 references uses 123 K, while 1,000 references take 1.4 MB. These files only include bibliographic data.
- I plan to write a manuscript-based thesis including journal articles. Can I produce a complete bibliography listing all my references at the end of my thesis?
EndNote lets you list references at the end of each section of a Word document and create a full list of references at the end of the document.
- I had problems installing EndNote. What should I do?
Follow the step-by-step installation instructions. If the problem persists, uninstall EndNote and start again. The first chapters of the Thomson Reuters Getting Started Guide may also be useful.
