LEVEL OF STUDY

You need to decide which level of study you want to apply for before submitting an admission application to Polytechnique Montréal.

You should submit an admission application for each level of study that interests you. Polytechnique Montréal has three levels of study:

  • Undergraduate bachelor’s degrees in engineering are training programs for engineers that give you the title of engineer and allow you to practice engineering in Canada. If you are applying for a quota program (aerospace engineering or biomedical engineering), you need to list your second choice of program. If you are applying for a non-quota program, you only need to choose one program. Once you are admitted, you can change to one of the ten non-quota programs.

  • Graduate studies: Graduate diplomas (DESS), master’s degrees, and PhDs are graduate programs that are open only to applicants who have earned at least one bachelor’s degree or have completed another equivalent program. You have the option of selecting two graduate programs.

  • Undergraduate certificates and microprograms are continuing education programs adapted for  professional students. You can select two undergrate certificate programs or microprograms.

  • You can also ask to register as an independent student or an auditor. An independent student or auditor is someone who is not applying to earn a degree.  Even though they have not been accepted into a specific program, independent students and auditors can register for one or more regular courses in any of the three levels of study described above (certain restrictions apply).

Note: International students cannot apply for undergraduate or graduate microprograms or certificates or enrol as auditors or independent students.

DESIRED ADMISSION SEMESTER

The fall semester begins in late August, the winter semester begins in early January, and the summer semester begins in May. The short summer session is seven weeks of classes and the long summer session is 15 weeks of classes.

Bachelor’s in engineering

There is no summer admission for bachelor’s degree in engineering programs (training for engineers).

Since biomedical engineering and aerospace engineering are quota programs, students are only admitted in the fall semester each year.

Non-quota programs are available in the fall and winter semesters.

Graduate studies

Students can be admitted to all graduate diploma (DESS), master’s, and PhD programs in the fall, winter, or summer.

Undergraduate certificates and microprograms

There is no summer admission for undergraduate certificates and microprograms. These programs are offered in the fall and winter semesters.

Since the Certificate in Biomedical Technologies — Electronic Instrumentation, Internship Profile is a quota program, students can only be admitted in the fall semester each year.

CHOICE OF PROGRAM

You should submit an admission application for each level of study that interests you. Depending on your plan of study, you may be asked to select two programs on your admission application. The programs you select must be the same level of study.

Bachelor’s degrees in engineering (undergraduate)

Training programs for engineers give you the title of engineer and allow you to practice engineering in Canada. Polytechnique Montréal has 12 bachelor’s degree programs.

If you are applying for a quota program (aerospace engineering or biomedical engineering), you need to list your second choice of program. Consult the FAQ – Quota Programs to learn more about them.

If you are applying for a non-quota program, you only need to list your first choice of program. The admission eligibility criteria is the same for non-quota programs. Once you are admitted, you can change to one of the ten non-quota programs.

Important note: Applicants cannot select tracks in the integrated preparatory year or the propaedeutic year in engineering when they submit their admission application. These tracks will be offered to the appropriate applicants in response to their application for admission to the bachelor’s training program for engineers. Consult the FAQ – Preparatory Year to learn more about it.

Graduate studies

Graduate diplomas (DESS), master’s degrees, and PhDs are graduate programs that are open only to applicants who have earned at least one bachelor’s degree or have completed another equivalent program. You can select two graduate programs.

For each engineering specialty, you can choose from among a number of programs whose lengths of study and levels of research involvement are adapted to the needs of each applicant. Consult the list of graduate programs.

Note: International students cannot apply for graduate microprograms.
Undergraduate certificates and microprograms

Undergraduate continuing education programs are adapted for professional students. Polytechnique Montréal offers top quality technical continuing education activities for engineers, technologists, technicians, and other professionals. Courses are mainly offered at night, but some distance education courses are also available. Certain programs are designed to meet the needs of different community members, such as international graduates, firefighters, and public safety workers. Explore new areas of expertise and get a university certificate with our new nine-credit undergraduate microprograms. Consult the list of undergraduate certificates and microprograms.

Note: International students cannot apply for undergraduate certificates and microprograms.
Independent student or auditor

An independent student or auditor is someone who is not studying to earn a degree. Even though they have not been accepted into a specific program, independent students and auditors can register for one or more regular courses in any of the three levels of study described above (certain restrictions apply).

Consult the course directory for various levels of study by program:

Or

Consult the list of course abbreviations (make sure to properly identify the level: BA, GS, or CE)
